This year, five U.S. history and social studies teachers participated in the Study Tour in Korea. Throughout the program, they visited important historical and educational sites connected to the Japanese military “comfort women” issue, Korea’s modern history, human rights, democratization, and the ongoing movement for truth and justice.

The teachers participated in the Wednesday Demonstration, visited the National Museum of Korean Democracy, the House of Sharing, Dongducheon camp town sites, and the War and Women’s Human Rights Museum. These visits helped them understand the “comfort women” issue not only as a history of wartime sexual violence, but also in relation to colonialism, militarism, survivor testimony, human rights, historical memory, and transnational redress movements.

The visit to the House of Sharing was especially meaningful for the teachers. Many were deeply moved by the grandmothers’ testimonies, paintings, personal belongings, and the history of their activism. The Dongducheon visit also helped the teachers confront the history of U.S. military camp towns in Korea and the gendered violence connected to militarization.

The program concluded with the 2026 U.S.–Korea History Teachers Conference at Sogang University, co-hosted by CARE, CWJC, and the Research Institute on Japanese Military Sexual Slavery. U.S. and Korean teachers shared classroom approaches for teaching the “comfort women” issue and other difficult histories, including conflict-related sexual violence, women’s rights, exclusion, hate, denialism, and contested historical memory.

We are grateful to all participating teachers, presenters, interpreters, partner organizations, and supporters who made this program possible. Most importantly, we are encouraged that these teachers will bring what they learned in Korea back to their classrooms, helping students understand this history with greater depth, accuracy, and care.

Thank you for continuing to support CARE’s educational work and our efforts to ensure that the history of the Japanese military “comfort women” is taught, remembered, and carried forward.

With gratitude,

Phyllis Kim
