Glendale Proclaims “Korean Comfort Women Day” for the 14th Year!! 글렌데일시 14번째 “한국 위안부의 날” 선포!!

We’re honored to share that the City of Glendale has once again proclaimed July 30 as Korean Comfort Women Day, marking the 14th consecutive year of this important recognition.

글렌데일 시의회는, 2025년7월30일을 다시 한 번 “한국 위안부의 날”로 선포하여, “위안부” 문제의 중대성을 인정하는 전통을 14년째 이어가고 있습니다.

The proclamation, which began in 2012, was formally celebrated at the Glendale City Council meeting on July 29, 2025, with representatives from local Korean American organizations including CARE and Hwarang Youth Foundation in attendance.  CARE presented bouquets of flowers to each City Council members to express the community’s appreciation for Glendale.

2012년에 최초로 선포된 위안부의 날은, 2025년7월29일 시의회에서 선포되었으며 이 자리에는 북부한인회, 화랑과 위안부행동(CARE) 등 로컬 한인단체에서 참석하여 함께 축하했습니다. 시의회 동영상을 보시려면 여기를 클릭하세요. 위안부행동(CARE)에서는 시의원들께 감사의 표시로 꽃다발을 준비하였습니다.

Councilmember Elen Asatryan delivered especially powerful remarks, expressing pride that Glendale is one of the few cities in the U.S. with a “Comfort Women” Memorial.  She reflected on her visits to Korea and Japan, and underscored her unwavering stance:

As a woman, as a leader, and as an Armenian American whose great-grandmother survived the Armenian Genocide, I cannot stay silent when historical truths are questioned.  Denying the “comfort women” history is no different from denying my own family’s history – and I will always take a stand.

엘렌 아사트리안 시의원은 글렌데일이 “위안부” 기림비를 가지고 있는 미국에서 몇 안되는 도시라는 데 자부심을 느낀다며, 한국과 일본을 방문한 경험을 언급하며, 다음과 같은 감동적인 발언을 하였습니다.

“여성으로서, 리더로서, 그리고 증조할머니가 아르메니안 인종청소를 겪으신 아르메니안계 미국인으로서, 역사적 진실이 의심받을 때 저는 침묵할 수 없습니다. “위안부” 역사를 부정하는 것은 내 가족의 역사를 부정하는 것과 다를 바 없으며, 저는 언제나 이에 맞설 것입니다.”

Glendale’s continued commitment is a testament to the power of remembrance, truth-telling, and solidarity in the face of denial and erasure.
We are grateful to the City of Glendale for its steadfast support and to our community members who continue to stand with us in this global human rights movement.
